Originally from Bolivia, Alvaro Tapia studied finance at Texas A&M University before relocating to Dublin for his MSc in Business Analytics. Alvaro is one our scholars and student ambassadors, a position awarded to applicants who demonstrate excellence in academics, are positive role models, and show potential to enhance the student experience. We spoke to him about the MSc in Business Analytics and how he manages the programme workload.

Can you talk a little bit about how you secured a Scholarship at Trinity Business School?

The Trinity Business School Scholarship (of funding up to €10,000) are provided in recognition of academic excellence and diversity in experience and background. Days after my graduate programme application, I was invited to apply for this scholarship due to my experience. The process involved submitting a video to demonstrate that I had the potential to become a student ambassador, an essential quality sought by scholarship holders. The scholarship funding made a big difference, particularly for someone like me who was pursuing a masters programme overseas.

What have you enjoyed the most about your programme so far?

I decided to pursue my programme because data-driven decisions are crucial in the financial sector. Throughout my coursework, I have been challenged to learn data-related tools and their applications to real business scenarios. I enjoy the balanced blend of technical and managerial materials such as the academic articles, datasets and videos delivered in the modules. They demonstrate the relevancy and superiority of this programme in a broader context. The faculty on this programme also consists of Ph.D. professors with an impressive professional trajectory and notable contributions to their academic field.

Have you gained any useful tips on how to manage your workload?

Strong organisational skills are essential to manage the workload. A trick I have used within my first semester is to focus on task prioritization; I recommend tackling each homework by its due date first. When it comes to group projects, one helpful tip is to create a WhatsApp group so everyone can coordinate the division of the parts.

What do you do to manage your stress levels, especially during exams ?

In my opinion, stress is an unavoidable component of student life, and rather than letting it consume you, I suggest channeling it towards action. Prioritizing organisation over procrastination can obviously reduce stress levels before reaching the exam season. Do not be afraid to ask questions or for help; whether it is a classmate, faculty member, or administrator, there is a great community willing to support you at Trinity.

Would you recommend this programme to others?

Yes, having the chance to be part of Trinity’s student community has been a dream come true. My first semester challenged me to actively engage in class, participate in different societies and further my knowledge during the many hours spent in the library! Trinity’s vibrant atmosphere is contagious - you get to be part of many events, interact with students from all around the world and forge strong friendships. The MSc in Business Analytics is a rigorous programme that not only enhances my coding skillset but also teaches the importance of analytical storytelling in the business world. I am eager to see what the upcoming semester holds for me at Trinity Business School.
